In late Spring 2023, as we prepared for our grand opening, Samantha, our CEO, received a heartwarming call from Stephanie, the granddaughter of Mike Adshed. Seeking respite care for Mike, who lives with dementia, Stephanie wanted her family to enjoy a holiday while knowing Grandad was in good hands. This call marked the beginning of something truly special.
During his stay, Mike’s engaging personality, his military background, and his love of the arts, created a safe and friendly environment for people who lived in the home. Impressed by his ability to make everyone feel at home, we appointed Mike as our Resident Ambassador. Since then, he's been a cherished member of our community, bringing joy through his passion for drawing and providing support to newcomers. Mike went home after his respite but has since come back most weeks to meet with people who have just moved in or to spend time helping people draw and be part of something special.
We're thrilled to announce that Mike has been shortlisted for an esteemed award in the Dementia Care Awards, in the Inspirational Person Living with Dementia category! This recognition celebrates his exceptional contributions in enhancing the lives of everyone at The Maples, especially people living with dementia.
The Dementia Care Awards celebrate and acknowledge excellence in dementia care nationwide, highlighting individuals like Mike who make a profound impact through dedication and compassion.
Stephanie shared, “It’s so lovely that Mike has been considered for this award. He’s always been so helpful and considerate throughout his life, he’s not quite the same person now but he’s still very kind.”
From engaging in activities to offering companionship, Mike's creativity and genuine care has made a positive difference in the lives of many individuals living with dementia. He’s a true inspiration to both the people who live and work at The Maples.
We eagerly await the awards ceremony, where the winner will be revealed. Fingers crossed! 🤞🎉
